The dyslexia piece is fairly new to the district within the last couple years, Bjorge said. But teachers are now trained to look for four indicators to determine if a child is dyslexic:

  • Poor phonemic awareness, or the ability to hear, identify, and manipulate individual sounds in spoken words.

  • Poor decoding, or the ability to use knowledge of letter-sound relationships to accurately read a word.

  • Poor encoding, or spelling.

  • Poor orthographic recall, or the ability to recognize a particular pattern of letters as a familiar word or familiar letter strings.
